Excerpts

Catalyst for Social Change

DRFHSD focused on improving the lives of the underprivileged through its innovative programs. Dr. Reddy said, "The Foundation had become the laboratory for catalyzing reproducible, sustainable, innovative experiments for social change."

In 1996, DRFHSD took up its first project - Micro Entrepreneurs in Sanitation (MES). MES initially started off with an idea to improve sanitation in urban areas by encouraging community participation in the cleanliness and sanitation program. Under MES, committees were formed in different localities, and these committees employed street cleaners (who were working with the Municipal Corporation) for garbage collection and disposal. A Beacon of Hope

The national and the local media extensively covered the success of the projects undertaken by the Foundation. Projects like CAP and LABS attracted wide media attention, thus spreading the message of corporate social responsibility.

It exemplified the change that could be brought in the lives of the underprivileged through corporate initiatives. Analysts feel that with its initiatives through DRFHSD, Dr. Reddy's has set an excellent example of corporate social responsibility and good corporate citizenship for other companies.

By 2003, over 30 corporate houses were involved in the LABS project. Some of these corporate houses were - the Murugappa Group, the Rane Group, HLL, Khivraj Motors, Standard Chartered Bank (India), Voltas, HSBC, Fabmart and the Fair & Lovely Foundation. LABS also received funds from USAID and UNDP for its innovative approach towards providing better livelihood to young adults in slum areas...
